The Sewanee Review will host a reading and reception in celebration of its 500th issue. The event, which will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, in Convocation Hall, features readings from SR contributors Ben Fountain, Elizabeth Weld, Justin Taylor, and Sidik Fofana.
Founded in 1892 by William Peterfield Trent, the Review has not missed an issue in 125 years. During the 20th century, the magazine published T. S. Eliot, Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Saul Bellow, and W. H. Auden, among many others. Last year, after the retirement of longtime editor George Core, the Review came under the leadership of novelist Adam Ross, author of the New York Times-bestselling Mr. Peanut. Since then, the magazine has been redesigned by Peter Mendelsund and Oliver Munday, and has published pieces by bestselling authors Alice McDermott and Francine Prose, Pulitzer Prize-winners Richard Russo and Jon Meacham, and nationally recognized poets Kaveh Akbar and Donika Kelly, along with carefully selected debut fiction and poetry. The Review’s latest issue, the fourth installment in its 125th volume, is the 500th—a milestone reflected on the issue’s autumnal-hued cover.
Ben Fountain, who is travelling from Texas to read at the event, is author of the novel Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in 2012, and was made into a movie by director Ang Lee that was released last year. His story “One Hundred Million Years of Solitude” appears in the Fall 2017 issue. Sidik Fofana, whom community members may remember from his reading at the Review’s Winter Open House event last February, made his fiction debut in the Winter 2017 issue with his story “The Okiedoke.” His new story “The Rent Manual” appears in the 500th issue as well, along with Elizabeth Weld’s “Evening Dogs.” Justin Taylor’s story “True Blue Time,” was in the Review’s Summer 2017 issue. Faculty members from the University will also read poetry from the 500th issue.
The readings will be followed by a reception and refreshments.
